Little Lending Library at Harry Myers Park

This project started from a love for reading that I developed as a child.

I am currently pursuing a masters in publishing, and Little Libraries for Literacy stemmed from my capstone ethics project themed "Make the Place Better." I thought what better way to benefit my community than to further a love for reading that inspires children? After all, my love for books is what led me to study for a masters in publishing.

With that I developed a project around a lending library. I wanted the project to achieve several benefits for Rockwall's kids. These included being accessible to children of every age, promoting family literacy, getting kids outdoors and active, and serving an educational purpose. Placing a library with a wide range of book in Harry Myers Park checked all of these boxes!

The lending library at Harry Myers Park carries book for kids ages 0 to 17, including board books, picture books, early readers, middle grade books, and young adult books. I strove for a mix of popular and fun titles as well as educational and relevant ones. Many of the books are nature themed to involve the surrounding park atmosphere.

The idea behind a lending library is an honor system of take a book, leave a book. Readers may choose a book that interests them to read at the park or to bring home with them. Next time they come to the park, they can return the book they borrowed or replace it with a book from home. If you don't frequent Harry Myers Park, it is recommended to limit children to reading at the park only. While at the lending library, consider writing in our guest book located in the top cabinet or leaving a photo of your time at the lending library on Rockwall Parks & Recreation's social media!

The lending library is located on the Eastern side of the park, next to the butterfly garden. An extension of flagstone and reading bench have been added by Rockwall Parks & Recreation to create a great place for outdoor story time!
